Oakville, with a population of
164,738, is a town on Lake Ontario, halfway between
Toronto and Hamilton. In 1962 the town of Oakville
merged with the neighbouring villages, Bronte,
Palermo, Sheridan, and Trafalgar to become the new
Town of Oakville. Oakville is divided into many
different communities called divisions, including
Old Oakville, Bronte, Iroquois Ridge and Glen Abbey,
which have little to do with politics and are
largely for geographic reference.
Oakville has a strong sporting community, and is home to the
National Women's Hockey League team, the Oakville
Ice, as well, Oakville has an OHA Junior A men's
hockey team called the Oakville Blades who were the
Western Conference champions in the 2003 - 2004
season. Current Indianapolis Colts placekicker Mike
Vanderjagt and Olympic gold-medalist Adam van
Koeverden were born and raised in Oakville, as was
former NFL offensive lineman Tony Mandarich.
Olympic gold-medalist sprinter Donovan Bailey has a
street and park named after him in the Oakville area
and attended Q.E. Park High School in his early
years after arriving in Canada from Jamaica.
Oakville also sports the Oakville Aquatic Club, and
Oakville Blue Devils, who won the Canadian
Professional Soccer League in 2005.
Not only is Oakville strong in sports stature, it is
also home to numerous schools on many levels,
including Sheridan College, a renowned animation and
business studies institute..
